“Shravan” is considered the holiest month of the year, known as “Sawan mas” (5th month of Hindu Calender). This month is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Shiva is one of the deities of the Hindu Trinity along with Lord Vishnu and Brahma.

The month of Shravan derives its name from the star "Shravan" that rules the sky on Poornima. Each day of Shravan is regarded as very pious and special prayers and rituals are performed at Lord Shiva Temples.

It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva during Shravan month is considered more powerful than worshiping during normal days.

All Mondays which fall during Shravan month are considered highly auspicious for fasting and known as Shravan Somwar or Sawan Somwar Vrats. Many devotees observe sixteen Mondays or Solah Somwar fasting from first Somwar of Sawan month.
